#31 Thinking, Marshall Project, and no list on Reading.email
Also, why another newsletter calls it quits.
Is a platform responsible for misinformation?
Critics have taken Twitter and Facebook to task about spreading misinformation. After years of claiming neutrality, both banned Donald Trump from their platforms. They learned.
The newsletter company Substack apparently does not believe they should monitor misinformation in newsletters using their platform. They provide the ‘backend’ for our newsletter and many of the newsletters in Reading.email and Finding.email. We make an editorial choice about which newsletters are available on those platforms.
People are rightfully upset a this “neutral” position. The newsletter "Hip to Waste" has taken a stance. They are discontinuing their newsletter because of Substack's support of two "prominent losers". So please read Hip to Waste’s ‘Goodbye’ issue.
I plan to continue to voice this concern as a customer. Substack needs to recognize that neutral is not possible when it comes to misinformation. If not, I may have to move this newsletter to another platform in the future like Hip to Waste.
This Week's Promoted Newsletters
Thinking About Things newsletter has a unique format. It is simple: a headline, a category and one sentence summary of an article from The Atlantic, an MIT newspaper, a blog, The Prometheus Society, or a couple other newsletters. Then there is a quote with a link to the article . You are asked to rate it. Heavy think pieces. Nice twist on the usual digest format.
The Marshall Project is nonprofit journalism about criminal justice covering all 50 states. A recent article covered how prisons are opening up after coronavirus fears, for some in time for Mother's Day. This newsletter will be in the equality list.
Buggy
No promoted list this week. I introduced a bug into my code that prevents new lists. I'll get caught up next week after fixing this code.
